"This collection of essays is devoted to the study of intermediality in French-language comics and graphic novels. It explores the relations or interconnections between the modalities of expression and representation used in bande dessinée and that of other media. This book provides a theoretical reflection on the notion of intermediality in comics, as well as thirteen chapters studying comics that transgress established boundaries between media, create a dialogue between their respective devices, or combine various vehicles or platforms of representation. These individual analyses discuss mixed-media uses of comic art and film, literature, reportage, painting, photography, religious iconography, history, memory studies, video games, and music. All chapters primarily focus on French-language works, although some comparative essays partially discuss graphic works in other languages"--

"This book charts the ways in which intermediality - the crossing of borders between film and other arts and media - can provide an encompassing, inclusive and non-teleological understanding of film history. Moving across diverse approaches, technologies, national contexts and artistic styles, the collection depicts a clear as much as complex trajectory of cinematic phenomena according to the medial and artistic interactions they require and produce. Visions of the 'evolution' of cinema have traditionally hinged on the axis of World War II that separates so-called 'classical' Hollywood cinema from a purported 'modern' European-style production, a scheme that subjects the entire world to the cinematic history of two hegemonic centres. In turn, histories of film as a technological medium have focused on the specificity of cinema as it gradually separated from the other art and medial forms at its base - theatre, dance, fairground spectacle, painting, literature, still photography and other pre-cinematic modes. Taking an ambitious step forward with relation to these theories, this book places its bet on the fluid quality of the film form itself. In so doing, it opens up to an array of exciting and often neglected artistic expressions worldwide as they permeate and interconnect films across temporal, geographical and cultural borders. Scenes of reading are omnipresent throughout film history. This interdisciplinary study is the first to characterize the structures, functions, and interpretations of filmic stagings of sensuous and aesthetic acts of readings. In doing so, it does not simply close a gap in the research discourses of media studies and the sociology of reading, but also makes an original contribution to contemporary debates about aesthetic experience. Unabhängig von Produktionsland, zeitlichem Kontext, Genre und der Einordnung in U- oder E-Kunst finden sich in der filmgeschichte zahlreiche literarisch-ästhetische Lektürebegegnungen. In dieser Studie werden die filmischen Inszenierungsmöglichkeiten des sinnlichen Leseaktes erstmals interdisziplinär dargelegt.Der Autor bestimmt dabei die vielfältigen Funktionen filmischer Leseszenen und verortet diese in der Kulturgeschichte und in der Filmtheorie. Die Besonderheit der filmischen Realisierung des Lesens liegt aus filmphänomenlogischer Perspektive darin, dass in der filmischen Rezeption die Erfahrung (Filmerfahrung) einer Erfahrung (Leseerfahrung) möglich wird. Die Zuschauenden kann das zu Reflexionen sowohl über das Lesen (und Literatur) als auch über das Medium Film anregen.Das Buch schließt nicht nur eine Lücke im medienwissenschaftlichen und lesesoziologischen Forschungsdiskurs, sondern leistet gleichzeitig einen originären Beitrag zur gegenwärtigen Debatte um die ästhetische Erfahrung.
